Consumer Advocacy
Consumers are provided with non-legal advocates who inform them of their rights, and represent them to ensure that they obtain the services to which they are entitled. Such entitlements may include assistance with Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) appeals; access to transportation; employment training and affordable housing programs.
Community Advocacy
Efforts are made to effect positive change through interaction with local policy makers. The Center also encourages public and private establishments to remove architectural barriers from their facilities (as is required by Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act) to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal access to their communities.

Independent Living Skills Training
Individuals are counseled on how to successfully live independently through training in money management, their rights according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), making use of available public and private community resources, etc. Training can be tailored to the consumer’s individual needs. Free classes, including computer training, are also offered. It also incudes:
- Financial Management & Planning
- Interacting with Utility Companies
- Accessing Community Resources & Information
- Disability Rights (ADA, Rehab. Act, Fair Housing Act, etc.)
- Independent Living Philosophy
- Self AdvocacyComputer Training
Cross Disability Peer Support
Peer support is provided to persons with disabilities who need to speak with someone about their personal needs and concerns. Emphasis is placed on counseling and providing the guidance necessary to help them identify and reach their independent living goals. Consumers have the choice of individual or group counseling.
Housing Assistance
Assistance is given to persons with disabilities and their families in acquiring section 8 housing subsidies in order to procure adequate affordable and accessible housing to meet their temporary or long range needs.
Nursing Home Transitions
The greatest risk is not taking one. Center staff assist with the development of independent living and community transition plans and coordinate the supports and services needed for a successful transition.
